To tell, I can tell, tell you what in French

To tell, I can tell, tell you what in French

You know that ‘to tell’ means “dire” in French, but the way you use it in English can offer more translations in French.

 1. To tell = Savoir (to know)

How can I tell? Comment le saurais-je?
Is this blue or red? – I can’t tell: C’est bleu ou c’est rouge? – Je n’en sais rien.
You never can tell what life will bring you: On ne peut pas savoir (on ne sait jamais) ce que la vie nous apportera.
Who can tell? Qui sait?

2. I can tell, you can tell: ça se voit

You can tell he is joking: ça se voit qu’il plaisante
You are not happy, I can tell: Tu n’es pas heureux, ça se voit! (je le vois bien)

3. Expressions

How do you tell one from another? Comment fais-tu la différence entre les deux?

Tell you what, let’s go to the cinema: Tiens, si on allait au cinéma!
