Prefix bi-

The prefix bi- doubles the word. There is a list of words to know.

Centenaire
Mensuel
Bicentenaire
Bimensuel

The prefix bi- is not always a mark of double: bi is sometimes part of the word itself and in this case is not a prefix.

Préfixe en, em-

Mener
Terre
Prison
Traîner
Emmener
Enterrer
Emprisonner
Entraîner

En means in (em+prisonner: in jail) or with a word of movement (envoler, enlever, emmener…)

Prefix pré-

Histoire
Méditer
Nom
Préhistoire
Préméditer
Prénom

Pré means before.

 

Prefix re-

Dire
Bonjour
Redire
Rebonjour

Re- means the repetition, but not always re- also says that you wnt to put the thing as it was at the beginning: plier (to fold), replier (to fold again or to fold up): J’ai ouvert la feuille, maintenant je la replie (I open the sheet, now I fold it up)

Prefix sou-, sous-

Terrain
Ligne
Estimer
Souterrain
Souligner
Sous-estimer

Sou or Sous mean Under.

Prefix sur-

Doué,e
Homme
Nom
Surdoué,e
Surhomme
Surnom

Sur means On, over.
