A. Questions

1- What is not the subject: ce que or quoi.

What did you say:

– Qu’est-ce qu’il a dit?
– Qu’a-t-il dit?
– Il a dit quoi?

2- What is the subject: qu’est-ce qui.

What’s wrong: qu’est-ce qui ne va pas?

What has happened? Qu’est-ce qui est arrivé (il est arrive quoi?)

3- What + Noun: quel, quelle

What time is it? Quelle heure est-il?


What a bad boy! Quel méchant garçon
What a pity! Quel dommage!

B. Relative Pronouns:

4- What is not the subject: ce que.

I know what you want: Je sais CE QUE tu veux.

5- What is the subject: ce qui.

I know what has happened: je sais CE QUI est arrivé.

What is important in life: CE QUI est important dans la vie…

6- What … of: ce dont.

What I am proud of is… CE DONT je suis fier est…

To be proud of; être fier DE.

7- What … like: comment.

What’s your brother like? Comment est ton frère?

8-Prepositional Verbs:

Parler de = to talk about

What are you talking about? De quoi tu parles?

Penser à: to think about

What are you thinking about?

à quoi tu penses?

What is the: Quel est: quel est le problème, quel est ton nom, quel est ton numéro de téléphone.
What is this: Qu’est-ce que c’est?
What I am: Que suis-je?
