Vivir (to live)

2 – Irregular Verbs

a. They are diphthong verbs, one vowel becomes two.

Dormir (to sleep), the stem becomes ‘duerm-‘:
Duermo, duermes, duerme, dormimos, dormís, duermen.

Sentir (to feel), the stem is ‘sient-‘:
Siento, sientes, siente, sentimos, sentíns, sienten.

b. The first vowel is not the same:

Pedir (to ask) becomes ‘pid-‘:
Pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden.

c. The first singular form is not the same:

Salir (to go out): Salgo, sales, sale, salimos, salís, salemos

Decir (to say) has two irregularities: digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen
(In some latin american countries we say digo, decis, deci …)

Venir (to come) has two irregularities: Vengo, vienes, viene,venimos, venís, vienen
(In some latin american countries, we say: vengo venis, veni …)

d. Some verbs change a consonant:

Elegir (to choose): elijo, eliges, elige, elegimos, elegís, eligen

A lot of verbs in -gir act the same way: exigir, dirigir…

Huir (to flee): huyo, huyes, huye, huimos, huís, huyen (contruir : to build)

e. An important irregular verb:

Ir (to go): voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van

Querer (to want, to like), the stem is ‘quier-‘:

b. Irregular for the first singular form.

Hacer (to do, to make): hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen
Tener (to get, to have): tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen (2 irregularities)

c. Verbs in -cer:

Conocer (to know): conozco, conoces, conoce, conocemos, conocéis, conocen
The same for ‘obedecer’ (to obey), ‘aparecer’ (to appear), ‘ofrecer’ (to offer): obedezco, aparezco, ofrezco.

d. Ser: verb to be

We use this verb with things that does not change or qualify something.

Soy, eres, es, somos, soís, son

Soy grande: I am big; eres rubio: you are blond…
