C’est tard vs il est tard

1. Il est tard

It is getting late, it is late.
We use this expression for a current event

Je rentre chez moi, car il est tard: I am going back home as it is getting late

We also say: il se fait tard.

2. C’est tard

It is late, it will be late
We use this expression for future events

Un rendez-vous à 6 heures du soir? non, c’est tard, vous n’avez pas plus tôt?
An appointment at 6pm? no, it is late, do you have something earlier?

We also say: c’est trop tard.
