We have several expressions in French to say hello or good bye, some are interchangeable but not all. We are going to see when we can say “bonjour” and “bonne journée” or “bonsoir” and “bonne soirée”. It is difficult to say that this is a rule, what we can say that French people speak like that.

So look at this picture, we cut the day off into 5 parts: le matin, le midi, l’après-midi, le soir, la nuit.

In the Morning

When we meet someone we can say:

- Bonjour or salut (never bon matin or bonne matinée)

When we say good-bye:

- Au revoir, salut, bonne matinée (at the beginning of the morning only), bonne journée, à plus tard, à plus, à tout à l’heure, à bientôt…

At Noon and in the Afternoon

When we meet someone we can say:

- Bonjour or salut

When we say good-bye:

- Au revoir, salut, bonne après-midi, à plus tard, à plus, à tout à l’heure, à bientôt…

In the Evening

When we meet someone we can say:

- Bonsoir or salut

When we say good-bye:

- Au revoir, salut, bonne soirée, bonsoir, à plus tard, à plus, à tout à l’heure, à bientôt…

At Night

When we meet someone we can say:

- Bonsoir or salut

When we say good-bye:

- Au revoir, salut, bonsoir, bonne nuit, à plus tard, à plus, à tout à l’heure, à bientôt…

So, au revoir et à bientôt!
