Spanish Pronunciation Rules

There are some rules to know to better your pronunciation in Spanish:

1. Spanish words ending with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u, y):
The accent or stress is on the next to last syllable.
Example:
- Turista (tourist), pronunciation: tuRISta
- Mano (hand), MAno
- Botella (bottle), boTElla

2. Words ending with a "s" or a "n":
Same rule, the accent is on the next to last syllable:
Example:
- Joven (young), JOven
- Turistas (plural), tuRIStas

3. Words ending with a consonant (except "n" and "s", to remember these letters you can say N S for No Stress)
The accent is on the last syllable:
Example:
- Arroz (rice), arROZ
- Televisor (tv), televiSOR
- Pared (wall), paRED

4. All the other words have a written accent with the sign " ´ "
Example:
- Estación (station), all the words en ción have the accent on the last syllable, estaCION
- Fácil (easy), FAcil
- Matemático, all the words ending with "ico" or "ica" have the accent on the antepenultimate syllable, mateMAtico.
