Manger: to eat

Je mange une pomme / I eat or I am eating an apple
Tu manges du gâteau / You eat a piece of cake
Il mange de la confiture / He eats marmelade
Elle mange de la confiture / She eats marmelade
Nous mangeons de la viande / We eat meat
Vous mangez un gâteau / You eat a cake
Ils mangent des frites / They eat chips
Elles mangent des frites / They(she) eat chips

To translate "a" we use: un (m), une (f)
If you eat a part of something we use: "de la" with feminine word and "du" (instead of "de le") with masculine word. For example, if you have in front of you a big cake and you just want a piece, you will say: je mange du gâteau, but if the cake is as small as a biscuit, you can eat it, so we say: je mange un gâteau.

"des" is the plural of "un" or "une":
I eat a cake: je mange un gâteau
I eat cakes or some cakes: je mange des gâteaux
